History of the Christina O Luxury Yacht

The Christina O yacht was originally built back in 1943 and was commissioned as a Canadian convoy escort. In 1954, after 11 years in the service of Canada, it was purchased by the famous shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

Onassis would then go on to plough over $4 million into the ship, transforming it into the most elegant and advanced private yacht of it’s time, and a host to several extravagant celebrations. He duly named the yacht Christina, after his daughter.

Onassis had a firm affection for the yacht, and made it his unofficial second home from 1954 to 1975.

IT was also during thistime, that the yacht’s guest list was the veritable who’s who of dignitaries and celebrities, from Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas as well as countless others.

It was aboard the Christina O that John F. Kennedy first met Winston Churchill, and the vessel also played host to two of the most celebrated wedding receptions of the century – Prince Rainier of Monaco to Grace Kelly and Onassis to Jacqueline Kennedy.

In 1975, after Onassis’ death, his daughter kindly donated the yacht to the Greek government, before it was purchased in 1998 by Onassis family friend and shipping industry leader, John Paul Papanicolaou. Papanicolaou then began Christina’s three-year restoration, a process which involved meticulous research, craftsmanship and engineering.

After more than 25 years, the yacht would return to sail into a new millennium in her original grandeur complemented by today’s latest technology.

As the Christina O’s distinguished past blends into the dawning of a new era, the yacht affords a new generation an opportunity to experience the extraordinary and luxurious lifestyle of the Onassis years.
